Each month members will vote on selected books set in different travel destinations. Genres will vary. Just like travel often takes us out of our comfort zone, reading new genres can do the same. The book that receives the most votes will be read over the course of a month. On the 2nd Tuesday of every month, we will ask you to post your review. Share your thoughts on the book through our Facebook group. Also, virtual meetings and in-person meetings will be held periodically based on the feelings of the group! You can find Wanderlust Reads on facebook!

In our facebook group I will share posts on the destination. I will also share the themes mentioned in the book. Before our meeting, I’ll share some tasty cocktails, mocktails, and food inspired by the book. Head over right now and join our group on FACEBOOK.

Books Being Voted On For March!

Case Histories by Kate Atkinson

Setting: Scotland

Crime Fiction

This book introduces Jackson Brodie, a former police inspector and now private investigator. The plot revolves around three seemingly unconnected family tragedies – the disappearance of a three-year-old girl from a garden; the murder of a husband by his wife with an axe; and the motiveless murder of a solicitor’s daughter. Case Histories has been described as Atkinson’s breakthrough, and she has since published five additional novels featuring Brodie. Scotland’s moody landscape is also a major character in this story.

In Patagonia by Bruce Chitin

Setting: Patagonia

Non Fiction

An exhilarating look at a place that still retains the exotic mystery of a far-off, unseen land, Bruce Chatwin’s exquisite account of his journey through Patagonia teems with evocative descriptions, remarkable bits of history, and unforgettable anecdotes. Fueled by an unmistakable lust for life and adventure and a singular gift for storytelling, Chatwin treks through “the uttermost part of the earth”— that stretch of land at the southern tip of South America, where bandits were once made welcome—in search of almost forgotten legends, the descendants of Welsh immigrants, and the log cabin built by Butch Cassidy. An instant classic upon its publication in 1977, In Patagonia is a masterpiece that has cast a long shadow upon the literary world.

Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel

Setting: Mexico

Fiction

Earthy, magical, and utterly charming, this tale of family life in turn-of-the-century Mexico became a best-selling phenomenon with its winning blend of poignant romance and bittersweet wit.

The number one bestseller in Mexico and America for almost two years, and subsequently a bestseller around the world, Like Water For Chocolate is a romantic, poignant tale, touched with moments of magic, graphic earthiness, bittersweet wit – and recipes.

A sumptuous feast of a novel, it relates the bizarre history of the all-female De La Garza family. Tita, the youngest daughter of the house, has been forbidden to marry, condemned by Mexican tradition to look after her mother until she dies. But Tita falls in love with Pedro, and he is seduced by the magical food she cooks. In desperation, Pedro marries her sister Rosaura so that he can stay close to her, so that Tita and Pedro are forced to circle each other in unconsummated passion. Only a freakish chain of tragedies, bad luck and fate finally reunite them against all the odds.
